April 20 – 22, 2011
Did you know that Portland and its surrounding areas are growing in popularity as a wedding destination? Well, it’s easy to see why – the spring flowers are in bloom everywhere, and the florist in me had to be restrained from grabbing every tulip and daffodil I saw for an impromptu bouquet.
Jordan Gladow from Blum, Design in Flowers tells me that the locally grown peonies are spectacular right now and the open, down-to-earth hospitable nature of Oregonians is in season all year round.
With only a few days in the area, I decided to focus on the wedding scene in Portland; I will return soon to explore the wineries and the private estates in the countryside.
A prerequisite for a destination wedding is a hotel that makes your guests feel at home, welcomed and pampered; the Nines, part of the Starwood Luxury Collection is just such a place.
Located in the center of town, this hotel is just a few years old and has done a superb job of blending modern hospitality with the history and tradition of the building that they artfully carved out to create a hotel space like none other.
One of my favorite finds was the Georgian Room, tucked away near the lobby – a graceful room preserved from an earlier time, perfect for small wedding ceremonies and intimate celebrations.
Another is the roof top patio, where the stunning views of Portland is all the décor you need for that big city style, yet still achieving an intimate gathering for 30-40.
The ballrooms offer the more traditional setting, but the details make the space extraordinary – imaginative art reflecting the local art scene, Murano glass chandeliers, lounge areas that highlight comfortable chic style so appropriate for this young, confident city.
My definition of exceptional service – it’s all in the details. From the moment I dropped the car off with the valet, I felt like an honored guest. I received the same level of attention to detail from housekeeping and room service, where it was so clear to see that people who work at this hotel take exceptional pride in their work.
